Nneka Ogwumike has announced that the 2026 WNBA season will be her last, bringing the curtain down on one of the most distinguished careers in women’s basketball.
The 36-year-old Los Angeles Sparks star confirmed her decision in an emotional conversation with Taylor Rooks on Boardroom Talks, saying she feels “grateful, fulfilled, and at peace” after 15 seasons in the league.
What a journey it has been. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft became Rookie of the Year, the 2016 league MVP and WNBA champion, an 11-time All-Star and one of the most respected leaders in professional basketball. Beyond the statistics, Ogwumike also became a powerful voice for players as longtime president of the WNBPA.
For Nigerians everywhere, however, Nneka’s story has always carried something extra. A first-generation Nigerian-American whose parents were born in Nigeria, she has worn her heritage with pride while excelling on one of basketball’s biggest stages.
From Stanford to Los Angeles, Seattle and back home to the Sparks, she showed young Nigerians in the diaspora what excellence, leadership and quiet confidence can look like.
So this is not simply goodbye.
It is thank you, Nneka — for the championships, the leadership, the representation and the example.
The jersey may soon come off. The impact will remain.
